The action takes place in a dystopian future. Events unfold in a multi-story underground prison, which is called "the Pit". Local prisoners either serve time here for some illegal act, or are sent here voluntarily in order to improve their place in society. The " Pit " has several hundred levels, and there are two people on each of them. Every day, a table with a variety of dishes is lowered from the" zero " floor, where the kitchen is located. People can eat as much as they want, but you can't keep food — violating the ban is punishable by death. Food is prepared so that there is enough for everyone, if the prisoners distribute it evenly. However, if at the" first "levels they overeat, then at the" hundredth " many people think about cannibalism. Goreng goes to prison of his own free will, hoping to take a more privileged place in society
